At our Center for Endocrine Medicine Hamburg, experienced specialists diagnose and treat pituitary diseases.
What are diseases of the pituitary gland?
Although the pituitary gland is part of the brain, it is also an endocrine gland with a large number of different cell types. Among other things, these cells produce hormones that stimulate the adrenal cortex, thyroid gland, mammary glands and gonads.
The hormones reach their target organs via the bloodstream. The adrenal gland, for example, is then stimulated to produce the stress hormone cortisol.
Various processes such as inflammation, "excessive" attacks by the body's own immune system, benign and malignant tumors, bleeding, congenital malformations or medication as well as the consequences of injury or radiation can lead to increased or reduced hormone production in the pituitary gland and thus cause a wide range of symptoms.
