Adrenal glands

Diseases of the adrenal glands

Adrenal glands are fundamentally responsible for the body's salt-water balance and for maintaining blood pressure. They do this by releasing the hormones adrenaline, noradrenaline and dopamine.

Experienced specialists diagnose and treat adrenal gland diseases at our Center for Endocrine Medicine Hamburg.

What are diseases of the adrenal glands?

Adrenal dysfunction can have a variety of causes. In addition to bacterial infections, diseases of the immune system (autoimmune diseases), genetic defects (including those affecting several endocrine glands), tumors, injuries, radiation and medication can lead to adrenal dysfunction.

Since adrenal function is controlled by the pituitary gland pituitary gland, damage to the pituitary gland can also lead to a secondary disruption of adrenal function.

Increased or decreased production of the stress hormones (adrenaline & noradrenaline) and other hormones produced in the adrenal medulla or adrenal cortex can lead to illness and should be closely examined and treated.
